Lot 116
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This piece moves way beyond the typical Colima male "drinker" redware pottery figure with respect to its masterful technique and refined artistry. Just look at that breathtaking visage with those subtly contoured facial planes that prompt pottery to truly read as human flesh and the sophisticated manner in which the sculptor rendered the details of his facial feature, the incised coiffure, pierced ears, and petaled helmet/headdress. Nude aside for his headdress, incised armbands, and loincloth, great emphasis is placed on the leaning posture of his body with legs slightly bent and upraised arms lifting a large drinking cup to his mouth. A wonderful example, among the finest we have handled from this ancient West Mexican shaft tomb culture. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: figure measures 8.125" L x 5.25" W x 9.75" H (20.6 cm x 13.3 cm x 24.8 cm)
