Description:

Pre-Columbian, Chimu culture, Peru, ca. 1250 to 1450 CE. This is a very fine brownware pottery stirrup vessel in the Inca transitional style. It has a two-part molded body with the same design in low relief on either side -- a central figure with a large plumed headdress, a necklace, and large ear spools. The figure is smiling, has a prominent nose, and holds its hands out to the sides. There is a charming small monkey perched on one side of the spout, giving it a pleasing asymmetry. Pottery like this one were produced in great numbers and traded over a large area; Chan Chan, the capital of Chimu, is thought to have had 12,000 artisans living and working there at the height of the culture. Size: 6.25" W x 9.75" H (15.9 cm x 24.8 cm).
