Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1910 CE. A silver Caballito Peso coin, struck to commemorate the centennial of Mexico's independence from Spain during the presidency of Porfirio Diaz. The obverse features the Mexican national emblem: an eagle with wings spread, facing right while devouring a snake, perched on a cactus atop a rock, with a laurel and olive branch below. The legend reads "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" and the denomination "UN PESO." The reverse showcases the personification of Liberty riding a prancing horse, from which this coin gets its nickname: "caballito." The sun rising on the horizon to symbolize the dawn of a new era - please note this is the "short ray" variant. The coin's incused edge is inscribed with "INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD." This coin was designed by Charles Pillet, a renowned French engraver and minted only from 1910 to 1914, making it a relatively rare and highly collectible item. Size: 1.52" Diameter (3.9 cm); silver quality: 95.7%; weight: 27.1 grams
