Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A hand-built orange terracotta figural vessel depicting a seated nude male figure - his face presenting fleshy jowls and his stomach protruding - with spotted skin covered with lesions formed by punctuated incisions. The shape of his body is dramatic - note the oversized, out-of-proportion head, rotund belly, and prominent penis/genitals. Although nude, he dons elaborate ear ornaments, a nose ring, beaded necklace, bracelets, and anklets - this extensive decoration suggesting that he is an elder of elite status. The figure sits upon a flared, concave base and wears a flared, peaked headdress/hat which also forms the vessel's rim. There is a hollow central tube for smoke to escape. Size: 7.25" W x 9.875" H (18.4 cm x 25.1 cm)

Provenance: private D. C. collection, California, USA; D. C. is an Emmy Award winning Hollywood writer and Executive Producer, purchased on May 2002 at Arte Primitivo Gallery, new York
