Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Atlantic coast, Veracruz culture, ca. 500-900 CE. Fine terracotta head with exquisite portrait-like detailing and breathtakingly naturalistic details. The artist of this piece virtually infused life into clay when this piece was created. Note the soft, fleshy eyelids and the heart-shaped lips that part to reveal the figure's teeth. In addition, the fanciful coiffure is a nice ethnographically specific detail. Custom, museum-quality stand. Measurements are for the piece itself. Measures 6-1/2" high with stand. 4.50"W x 4.50"H (11.43 W x 11.43 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
