Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A seated female figure, donning an ornate headdress, large ear ornaments, beaded pectoral, and loin cloth, with details highlighted in red cinnabar and black bitumen. She has an enlarged head, her face detailed with an intriguing blend of naturalistic and stylized features. With a parted mouth, she holds some type of weapon, staff, or instrument, perhaps indicating that she is engaged in ritual - chanting, singing, or praying. Size: 5-3/4"H x 4-1/4"W (14.6 x 10.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, a silent screen actress of the 1930's, Bel Air, CA.
