Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), Remojadas, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A delightful pottery whistle in the form of a standing figure with a flattened body, short limbs, and a giant head. Gazing forward, the fascinating figure presents incised eyes, a large, extended nose, a slightly open mouth, and a jutting chin. An elaborate headdress crowns the head, comprised of a flared brim, a curved crest, 3 projecting embellishments, applied clay strips, and long earflaps, while his body is adorned by a petite loincloth, lengthy earrings, and a thick necklace. Liberal remains of black, white, and red pigments decorate the surface. Note the artist's careful attention to detail, as demonstrated in the delineated fingers and complexity of the headdress. Perforations in the headdress and verso of the head allow the piece to produce a lovely whistle when blown into! Size: 4.4" W x 8.7" H (11.2 cm x 22.1 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
