Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, Remojadas, ca. 300 to 600 CE. A hand-built terracotta standing figure with a removable head and/or helmet headdress with a tall feathered crest ornament, openwork eyes and mouth, horned ears, and a grand collar/pectoral. The body is finely textured to present a feathered or furry coat - suggesting that this figure may be a shaman undergoing transformation to a zoomorphic being or deity. A very unusual piece, replete with fine technique, impressive artistry, and intriguing iconography. Custom stand. Size: 7.25" H (18.4 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private collection of William Leazer and William Swann, Dallas, Texas, USA
