Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz) culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built pottery female "coast watcher" seated in a cross-legged position. Her tubular arms drape gently to bent knees and flank a pair of perky breasts as well as a flat abdomen. Her serene visage exhibits impressed ovoid eyes, a conical nose above full lips, and enormous ear spools, and an elaborate headdress with shells and feathered decorations tops her broad forehead. Most of the figure is covered pale-orange slip, though applied black pigment around the eyes as well as red pigment atop the headdress provide a burst of color. Size: 4.125" W x 7.5" H (10.5 cm x 19 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Figure repaired and reconstructed from multiple large pieces with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Restoration to areas of both shoulders, back, neck, and headdress. Light fading to original pigmentation, and chips to head, limbs, and body. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation throughout. Old inventory number written in black ink on verso.
