Pre-Columbian, Veracruz, Mexico, ca. 450 to 650 CE. This is a hollow head from a large Veracruz pottery figure; the head has narrow eyes, delicate eyebrows and nose, and an open mouth; they wear enormous ear spools and have textured hair painted with the classic thick black color, chapapote, that is common to Veracruz artwork and is made from petroleum-rich deposits. The large scale, hand-modeled figures from Veracruz are known as Remojadas, from the region in Mexico that they originate from; intact, they range from 1' to 2' in height. They are usually portrayed with their arms up, and are made in parts, with the head added to the body using further clay that is smoothed over the neck line. The remains of this are clearly seen on the chin of this head. They are given flattened layers of clay to make their clothing; they also were often given gold or other precious objects as jewelry, though pieces with that detail remaining are rare. This particular head has a sensitive, striking face. Size: 5.5" W x 5.75" H (14 cm x 14.6 cm)

- Condition: The head is a fragment, broken from its body at the neck. There are repairs/restoration to one ear, and repairs to the back of the head. However, the face is largely intact and the figure is very impressive in person.
