Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A remarkable pottery head of an elite adorned with a flared, semi-circular headdress and huge earspools. Surmounted by a projecting brim, the evocative visage is comprised of 2 large, heavy-lidded eyes, a giant, protruding nose with a loop in between the nostrils for suspending ornaments, and full lips held in a slightly open smile. This figure showcases the distinctive, striking style of ancient Veracruz. Excavations in this coastal region of Mexico have revealed two types of impressive, detailed pottery figures from the Veracruz period: the Sentients, the joyous "smiling faces", and figures like this one, more serious, mostly adult figures, with elaborate costumes. Size: 2.8" L x 5.6" W x 4.5" H (7.1 cm x 14.2 cm x 11.4 cm); 7.9" H (20.1 cm) on included custom stand.
