Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. An adorable hand-built terracotta seated female "coast watcher" figure with her child holding onto her shoulder. She sits cross-legged with her arms resting on her knees, her large head displaying an entranced visage with a large headband atop her broad brow line. Light-orange and crimson-hued details adorn the mother's head, body, and legs, and both heads display black-hued embellishments made from chapapote, a bituminous pigment derived from petroleum-rich earthen deposits. Incised bicep designs, a large necklace, and hoop-shaped earspools make this a wonderful example from ancient Mesoamerica! Size: 5.25" H (13.3 cm).
