Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A stunning ceramic bust of a woman wearing the upper part of a coyote's head as a headdress. Her shoulders are slightly hunched, her small breasts just visible at the bottom of the sculpture. Large armlets studded with decoration are on her upper arms. The coyote headdress is magnificent, with three large crests rising from it, the closed eyes of the animal, and the large teeth of is upper jaw all well-rendered. Black chapopote (petroleum-rich pigment) decorates the face of both the coyote and the woman. The coyote was a sacred figure, often associated with trickster qualities. Size: 6.5" W x 8.5" H (16.5 cm x 21.6 cm); 10.55" H (26.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Top of headdress has been repaired in four places, with some small losses to the coyote snout. The rest of the figure is repaired from three large pieces. Excellent remaining detail and pigment.
