Description:

Pre-Columbian, Veracruz region of Mexico, Pabellon style, Late Classic period, ca. 750 to 900 CE. A ceramic cylinder vessel with a pale grey surface whose exterior has been molded to display bas-relief bands of deities and chiefs with glyph-like elements. These fantastical depictions are rare today, with few surviving examples of vessels like this one known. Vessels of the Pabellon style demonstrate the close connections between Veracruz and the Maya to their south, including showing that they had a shared iconography that related to the pan-cultural belief system of ancient Mesoamerica. Size: 5.5" W x 3.65" H (14 cm x 9.3 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in 1968-1970
