Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), Nopiloa style, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. A hollow-molded pottery standing female figure with broad feet, a wide waist wrapped in a flowing skirt, and a shirt incised with dozens of cruciform, stepped, and linear motifs. She holds a small dog in a pouch with her right arm and holds a large plaque adorned with applied pottery beads as well as a necklace boasting an Olmec-style face pendant in the center. Her stylized countenance is defined by slender ovoid eyes with impressed pupils, a petite nose, thin lips flanked by puffy cheeks above a rounded chin, and ears adorned with circular ear spools, all beneath an enormous headdress. Covered in cream-hued slip, this is a charming example of Nopiloa-style artistry! Size: 6.3" W x 7.8" H (16 cm x 19.8 cm)
