Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built pottery standing figure wearing a red-and-beige striped skirt beneath a thick belt. The figure holds both arms out from rounded shoulders, dons a bifurcated necklace with incised striations, and the enlarged ears are set with mottled greenstone earrings. The enlarged head features slit-form eyes, a bulbous nose, and protruding lips, all beneath a striated headband and a projecting brim adorned with incised linear motifs. Areas of red pigment adorn the skirt, chest, and face, and black pigment accentuates the eyes and mouth. Size: 5.4" W x 7.875" H (13.7 cm x 20 cm).

  • Condition: Greenstone earrings are ancient but were likely set into ears in modern times. Legs and lower body repaired from multiple large pieces, with chips and adhesive residue along break lines. Abrasions and nicks to limbs, body, and face, with fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
