Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Lucania, Velia, ca. 350 to 281 BCE. A silver / AR didrachm from Velia in Lucania. OBVERSE: Head of Athena facing right wearing crested Athenian helmet ornamented with griffin, Greek letter theta behind. REVERSE: Lion walking right, backwards "E" above. Greek inscription in exergue. BMC 1.102 variety. Size: 0.875" W (2.2 cm); total weight: 7.66 grams.

Velia, situated on the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Italy is south of Poseidonia. The city of Velia was founded circa 540 BCE by colonists from Phokaia in western Asia Minor who had fled their homeland following the Persian conquest. Soon after the city began, Velia began to strike its own coinage.
