Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian culture, ca. 3500 BCE. A black earthenware figure with thin slits for eyes and mouth and a dramatic hairline. The figure's body is simplified, with emphasis on the breasts and wide thighs; the figure's lower legs and arms are mere suggestions. These fired clay figures were produced, starting at the major Valdivian site of Real Alto, roughly five hundred years after similar ones were made in stone. Although most examples are female, some have both male and female properties, and their purpose and meaning remain unclear. These figures were found near hearths and food preparation areas, as well as in burials of important personages. Size: 1.45" W x 4.1" H (3.7 cm x 10.4 cm); 4.45" H (11.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
