Description:

Northwestern United States, Alaska, World War II era, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large and cozy pair of wolf fur mittens and a whale bone knife with a steel blade. The mittens are perfect for the frigid climates and were issued to pilots during WWII flying over the arctic, but the use of wolf fur was discontinued after 1942. The thick fur was insulating as well as wind and water resistant, and the broad gauntlet style was for tucking in parka sleeves, and the interior is lined with an olive-green wool felt. The knife is constructed from a polished bone grip riveted over the steel tang. There is nice wear from age and use to the knife, while the mittens are near perfect and lightly worn condition. Size of mittens: 16.5" L x 9" W (41.9 cm x 22.9 cm)
