Greece, Mycenaean Period, Late Bronze Age, ca. late 2nd millennium BCE. A huge pyxis with a cylindrical body and red fine-line decorations painted over much of its surface. Two upturned, curved handles are on the edges of the sharply delineated shoulder. The shoulder tapers upward to a wide neck that flares outward into a wide, turned out rim; a gentle roll of the edge of the rim creates a lip. The neck and mouth are painted solid red; below that are several rings. Around the shoulder are concentric half-circles and cross-hatched triangles; below that, the body is also ringed by narrow red bands. The base is flat and undecorated. This period is so named for the palace at Mycenae, famed in Homeric legend as the opulent seat of King Agamemnon - excavations there revealed an elite and long-lasting society with a great deal of wealth. This extended to the workshops of artisans who produced pottery like this vessel both for use in Greece and throughout the Mediterranean world; shiploads of similar jars went out as far as the Levant and Spain, carrying oil, wine, and other commodities.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

- Condition: Intact with excellent remaining pigment. Some stable cracks on the base that are the result of firing. Interesting deposits and an almost silvery iridescent patina on the interior base. Two small drilled holes for TL test.
