Description:

Early 20th century. This very fine example of a prestigious ritual weapon exhibits careful bead and leather work on the sheath. The blade itself is beautifully hammered and incised but shows no figurative work on the handle or blade. Technically, it cannot be considered an 'udamalore,' a ceremonial sword worn by high-ranking Yoruba chiefs and other officials of the Owo Kingdom. Nevertheless, pride of ownership is obvious here: the inscription on the scabbard appears in a prominent place and the elaborate leather work makes it apparent this is no ordinary accoutrement. Measuring 19" total length. Provenance: Ex-M. Cichon Tribal Arts, FL. All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Both sheath and blade are in very fine condition.
