Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An unusual Jalisco seated male carrier figure sitting in a dramatic position with a bag slung over his left shoulder. An intriguing type, sitting in a dynamic position, dramatically leaning forward with a curved back, his arms reaching forward, knees raised, and hands grasping his feet. Interestingly his body is somewhat emaciated with vertebrae of the spinal column showing along his curved back. Though originally painted with a red slip, some of the pigment has worn away due to hundreds of years of exposure to natural elements. His visage is quite expressive, delineated with coffee bean shaped eyes, a protruding nose bedecked with a nosering, lobed ears adorned with round ornaments, and parted lips. A rare and wonderful piece, replete with nice manganese deposits across the surface! Size: 5.25" W x 6.25" H (13.3 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex - private LA County collection acquired before 1990
