Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a fun pottery jar with a round body, flared spout, and the form of an animal - perhaps a dog, but, more likely, a bear. Although it is now difficult to imagine, Mexico was home to grizzly bears until the 1960s, and would have been known to the Jalisco people. This depiction shows the bear with a small head, an oddly duck-like mouth, and long arms ending in well-defined paws. A kind of tail or spine-like design goes up the back of the vessel. Size: 7.5" L x 5.5" W x 8.75" H (19 cm x 14 cm x 22.2 cm)
