Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Seated hunchback leaning his chin upon his crossed arms which rest on upraised knees. His characteristically elongated head presents a forlorn visage comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a long nose adorned with a nose ring, a red slip band across eyes and bridge of nose, and slightly parted lips. He wears a multi-banded, tight-fitting headdress, ear ornaments, and armbands. Size: 3.25" L x 3.125" W x 4.625" H (8.3 cm x 7.9 cm x 11.7 cm)

Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in the art of the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico, as they were thought of as powerful, shamanic figures - their physical deformities interpreted as visual signs that they were chosen and 'touched' by the deities.
