Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. An intriguing example of a highly stylized face pendant of an ovoid form that is hand-carved from mottled sage green stone with beige and dark green inclusions. The countenance bears a pair of shallow-drilled circular eyes as well as string-cut grooves delineating the mouth, nose, ears, and nasolabial folds. The brow is gently rounded and topped with a headdress bearing two biconically drilled suspension holes through the projecting tabs. Size: 1.375" W x 1.4" H (3.5 cm x 3.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000
