Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, Ulua Valley, Honduras, Central America, ca. 550-800 CE. This impressive Mayan cylinder was painstakingly painted with an intriguing iconographic program in red and orange slip. On opposing sides of the vessel we have two main winged figures dubbed angels in the field. With complex feathered wings, these figures reach forward in a seated or dancing position. While often referred to as "angels", they are actually elaborately costumed ceremonial figures. A row of alternating positive and negative flower-like pseudo-glyphs superimposed by a band of translatable glyphs encircle the top outer rim.
