Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A pair of hand-built terracotta idol figures meant to represent Astarte, a goddess known throughout the ancient Near East for her associations with femininity, child-birthing, and war. The first figure stands with arms bent beneath both breasts and wears a striated necklace beneath her paddle-shaped coiffure. The tallest figure presents with outstretched arms flanking perky breasts and wears a layered necklace with dozens of petite impressions beneath her bird-like face. Size of largest (outstretched arms): 2.4" W x 6.25" H (6.1 cm x 15.9 cm)

  • Condition: Shorter figure repaired from several pieces, with chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; taller figure is intact and very good. Both figures have nicks and encrustations to bodies and heads, with several stable pressure fissures to verso of taller figure. Great earthen deposits throughout.
