Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 600 to 1200 CE. A set of 2 hand-built and stone-burnished pottery jars adorned with intricate linear motifs. The first jar is of round-bottomed, egg-shaped form and has a russet-hued decoration band adorning the upper half of the body. The larger vessel resembles a turtle - with a petite head, attenuated limbs, and a triangular tail - with dense red and black linear embellishments covering its top half. Size of largest: 8.5" L x 7.75" W x 6" H (21.6 cm x 19.7 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA collection, acquired 1969 to 1970; ex-Dr. Jorge Lineas, San Jose, Costa Rica

  • Condition: Largest vessel with small areas of restoration around rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines; smaller vessel with stable fissures but otherwise intact. Each with minor fading to original pigment, otherwise in nice condition. Great linear motifs.
