Native American, Southeastern United States, North Carolina, Cherokee, ca. mid-20th century CE; Northwestern United States, Alaska or Canada, Aleut / Tlingit, ca. 20th century CE. A pair of handmade Native American coiled (or twined) baskets with lids. The larger is made from pine needles, utilizing a coiling technique to create layers of twisted needle bundles held together with wrapped and stitched raffia, and a small pinecone forms a knob. Pine needle basketry is a traditional craft of the Cherokee people, dating back centuries, and continues today as folk art and sale items. The smaller jar is tightly twined from rye or beach grasses, the lid sewn to the rim creating a hinge. Size: 6.75" Diameter x 3" H (17.1 cm x 7.6 cm)
