Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A set of 2 cast-bronze axe heads, each with a lengthy vertical blade projecting out from the top of a cylindrical socketing shaft. The first axe head exhibits a smooth shaft with a nubbin protrusion rising up from the top of the rim. The second axe head is of similar design but with the addition of 5 conical spikes emanating from the verso. Both weapons have developed layers of naturally-occurring patina in hues of green and brown. Size (smooth shaft): 4.5" L x 0.8" W x 4.8" H (11.4 cm x 2 cm x 12.2 cm); (spiked shaft): 5.25" L x 0.9" W x 3.75" H (13.3 cm x 2.3 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased from Artemis Gallery, August 29, 2016, lot 49b; ex-J. Hovsepian collection, acquired prior to 1985
