Description:

Western Europe, France, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of antique brass field telescopes / spyglasses with a case and leather sleeves. The smaller scope has a leather sleeve covering the body that fits into a canister made of thin cardboard covered in cotton, and the lens cap is stamped "FRANCE". The larger scope has a leather sleeve with small loops for a shoulder strap, and is unmarked. Both eye pieces have a tab for a brass swivel plate to cover and protect the glass. A spyglass is essentially a small refracting telescope, that was used primarily in the day for surveying the land / sea. Size of largest collapsed: 10.5" L x 2.25" Diameter (26.7 cm x 5.7 cm); fully extended: 38" L x 2.25" W (96.5 cm x 5.7 cm)

  • Condition: Antique / used condition. Indentations and abrasions, patina and wear to brass. Some cloudiness to lens, but both are functional. Leather sleeve seam on smaller scope is torn.
