Description:

Pre-Columbian, Belize, Maya, Preclassic Period, ca. 250 BCE to 250 CE. A sizable pair of hand-knapped chert blades exhibiting tapers bodies, broad heads, and nicely sharpened edges. Blades like these are famous from the Maya site of Cuello in northern Belize and found at several archaeological sites throughout southern Mesoamerica and the Caribbean, including at Tikal. Although they are sometimes called "daggers," they are only found in ritual deposits, and their form suggests a ceremonial purpose rather than an actual tool. Size of largest: 8" L x 2.875" W (20.3 cm x 7.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
