Tibet, 16th century. A tantalizing tantric fire gold-gilded bronze figure of a Dakini. In Tibetan Buddhism, a Dakini is a female spirit whose name translates to "she who traverses the sky", "she who moves in space", "sky walker", or most apropos in this case, "sky dancer". With a fierce expression, she is energetically and evocatively dancing the dance of destruction. Quite a vision, the Dakini is wearing a necklace of skulls, a crown adorned with five skulls symbolizing the five Dhyani Buddhas, and in her four hands, she holds a Vajra (a weapon that symbolizes the indestructibility of a diamond and the irresistible force of a thunderbolt), a Dril bu (a ritual bell), a Dhamru (a small ritual drum), and a Phurpha (a dagger). Laos, 19th century. Next, we have a solid, silver cast betel nut box carved to depict a Makura Water Dragon from Laos. Native to Southeast Asia, betel nut is the fruit of the Areca catechu palm tree that contains the stimulant arecoline. The nuts are ground and often combined with mineral lime and wrapped in the leaf of a Betel pepper plant, although sometimes chewed alone. Silver weighs approximately 150 grams. 3-1/2"H x 5-1/2"W
