Description:

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957). "Snowfall at Hinuma in Mito (Ibaraki prefecture)" and "Kansanomiya Shrine at Lake Tazawa" from "Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series" - Heisei prints published at the beginning of the Heisei period (ca. 1988). A wonderful pair of Japanese woodblock prints depicting beautiful winter landscapes with inscriptions and red chops by Hasui Kawase. Hasui Kawase was among modern Japan's most accomplished printmakers. He was a leader in the Shin Hanga art movement which was popular during the Taisho and Showa periods of the early 20th century - flourishing between 1915 and 1942. In a way, Shin Hanga was a revival of traditional Ukiyo-e art of the Edo and Meiji periods; however, Shin Hanga compositions departed from Ukiyo-e traditions by embracing the inclusion of natural light, a soft color palette, three dimensionality of the figure, as well as a sense of depth rather than flatness as we see in these examples. Size of each sheet is approximately: 10.5" L x 15.5" W (26.7 cm x 39.4 cm)

Heisei prints were published at the beginning of the Heisei period (1988-) by publisher Watanabe. Watanabe very carefully restored the original woodblocks created for Shin Hanga designs and sought the most skilled printers to print the Heisei editions. While Heisei prints come from a later printing edition, they are true to the beauty of the original edition.
