Description:

East Africa, Ethiopia, Anyuak & Harari culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of baskets hand made from vegetal fibers. One is an elongated boat or canoe shaped basket, probably from the Gambela Region of Ethiopia. The other coiled basket made from dyed grasses resting on a short foot, is from the Harari people. Leather handles with cowrie shell appliques and trim decorate the rim, and the splint grass fibers are dyed in bright pink-red, purple, and orange hues. Besides daily use and storage, colorful basketry is a major part of Ethiopian culture and economy, and woven vessels are used for dowry, special gifts, and decoration.
