Description:

East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE. A lovely pair of wheel-thrown pottery bowls with circular feet and flared rims, each covered in layers of lustrous glazing. The first bowl features dark gray cloud-form motifs and ovoid seals atop the pale green ground. The largest bowl exhibits incised curvilinear motifs that course along the interior surfaces and are accentuated with the soft olive-green glaze. Size of largest: 6.8" W x 2.6" H (17.3 cm x 6.6 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: ex-private van Dies estate collection, Maui, Hawaii, USA, acquired before 2000

  • Condition: Both items have minor nicks to rims, feet, and glazing around feet, with fading to pigmentation, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice craquelure to glazed surfaces. One TL drill hole beneath foot of each vessel.
