Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of nephrite jade pendants known as yupei, crafted from thin panels. One pendant is shaped like a maskette or vessel silhouette, while the other resembles an arched huang. Yupei refers to jade pendants used as ornaments for belts, waists, necklaces, and headwear. In the Qing Dynasty, it was popular for women to wear jade jewelries; as the wearer moved, the jade pieces emitted a soft, melodious sound, subtly reminding them to maintain proper manners and graceful behavior. Walking too quickly would produce a loud, disruptive noise, while a composed, courteous speed resulted in a pleasant, harmonious tone. Size of maskette: 1.4" L x 1.125" H (3.6 cm x 2.9 cm)
