Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A wonderful pair of pottery figures from Chancay culture, both shown standing and adorned in black, white, red, and beige pigment. Bare-chested, the larger stands with arms bent at elbows and hands raised in the style of a Cuchimilco figure. Alternatively the more petite figure is nude and holds both hands just beneath her breasts. Size of larger: 2.8" L x 7.2" W x 11.5" H (7.1 cm x 18.3 cm x 29.2 cm)

Provenance: private Manhattan Beach, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004

  • Condition: Larger is missing proper left arm and has had right arm repaired with break line visible, but body is intact. More petite has been professionally repaired with break lines visible. Both have chips, nicks, and abrasions commensurate with age. Nice remaining pigments and liberal earthen deposits throughout.
