Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A charming pair of pottery Cuchimilco figures, depicted in traditional Chancay fashion with legs together and arms spread as they tilt their huge heads slightly upward. Both are adorned with black on white pigment and appear to wear some kind of chest covering as well as a towering headdress that looms over their bulging eyes, pointed noses, closed lips, and sharp chins. Scholars posit that these "star gazers" were placed in tombs as companions or guardians of the deceased. Size of larger (lighter colored): 2.4" L x 5" W x 7.1" H (6.1 cm x 12.7 cm x 18 cm)

Provenance: private Manhattan Beach, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004
