Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely, intact pair of free-blown glass flasks, each with a spherical body, tall neck, and flared rim. The nearly translucent pale green surfaces display areas of naturally occurring iridescence in silvery and rainbow hues. Glass flasks like these were used to hold oils, scented perfumes, and other substances in a wealthy Roman woman's toilette. The allure and practicality of seeing the contents inside the bottle created a heightened demand for glass, which quickly replaced pottery jars. By the 1st century CE, glass vessels had become increasingly common and desirable, symbolizing luxury and refinement in Roman society, with production techniques spreading across the empire as glassmakers refined and diversified their craft. Size of largest: 2.5" Diameter x 5" H (6.4 cm x 12.7 cm); smallest: 1.8" Diameter x 3.75" H (4.6 cm x 9.5 cm)
