Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan, Iron Age, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A pair of cast copper blade heads from axe or adze heads, made using the lost wax process. Both have a similar form; thin and flat, with an elongated trapezoidal shape, flaring slightly at the blade end. The larger is pierced for attachment just above the base. While not ornate, these two tools may have been used and hafted to wood handles as picks or adze blades for carving wood. Size of largest: 5.6" L x 1.75" W (14.2 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection; large axe: ex-Artemis Gallery, October 30th 2017, lot # 240; ex-Kavet Collection, Massachusetts, USA acquired 1974. Smaller axe: ex-Howard Ruse collection.

  • Condition: Large blade has dark brown and green patina overall excellent with tiny losses to blade. Small blade has a deeper surface chips and abrasions, with green patina and oxidation.
