Description:

Ancient Near East, Canaan, the Levant, Middle Bronze Age II, ca. 1900 to 1550 BCE. A pair of cast bronze pick axe heads of a very slender design with a grooved support notch and an ovoid opening that forms a short socketing shaft. This narrow design indicates this type of axe was likely used to shape softer materials like wood or mud bricks, rather than for use in battle. Size: 6" L x 0.75" W (15.2 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection; shorter axe acquired from Artemis Gallery, April 24th 2017, lot# 14; ex-estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
