West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine gathering of 2 hand-carved wooden items from the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria. First is a male ibeji figure - created as a pair whenever a set of twins is born - standing with hanging genitalia and boasting slender arms and attenuated legs. The elongated head exhibits ovoid eyes, full lips, and an elaborately-arranged coiffure decorated with natural indigo pigment. Next is an intricately-carved finial meant to decorate the end of a fly whisk. The finial has 8 heads projecting from a central pole, the four upper heads with incised coiffures meeting in the center to form a small orb. Size: 3.3" W x 7.8" H (8.4 cm x 19.8 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Ibeji figure has small losses to head and base, with some inactive insect damage, and fading to original pigmentation. Finial has minor abrasions but is intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice patina throughout.
