Description:

North America, United States, Egyptian Revival period, ca. 1920s CE. A lovely pair of Egyptian Revival gilt brass and granite garniture urns, each presenting with Egyptian Revival decorative elements. The octagonal body of each vase displays alternating panels of black and red stone with a central hieroglyphic-inspired image of a throned, falcon-headed god, presumably Horus, wearing the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt as he holds an avian-headed scepter, all beneath a Greek kylix - a nod toward Classical motifs. Both on footed pedestals, the vessels boast additional opulent elements of pharaoh heads bearing loops and high-rising handles with finials of avian heads, each draped in a nemes and a stylized crown. The flared rim of each vase is sealed indicating they were intended solely for decorative purposes. Size (both about the same): 5.5" L x 6" W x 13.5" H (14 cm x 15.2 cm x 34.3 cm)

Much Egyptian Revival furniture is marked by the combination of Egyptian motifs and symbols with more traditional Western forms, particularly the classical - as seen here. While orientalist themes and subjects were common in painting and sculpture, Egyptian iconography was generally translated into the decorative arts, as the highly stylized aesthetic that meshed well with everyday objects like this example.
