Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita (sometimes Tumaco) culture, ca. 350 BCE to 350 CE. A rare greyish-white clay architectural model with a small peaked roof house on either side of a cylindrical socket with flat discs forming its base and rim. The non-architectural elements are accentuated with a reddish pigment. neck and vessel rim atop which is accented in reddish pigment. Size: 7.25" W x 6.15" H (18.4 cm x 15.6 cm)

As described in the exhibition, Design for Eternity, Architectural Models from the Ancient Americas - Metropolitan Museum of Art: From the first millenium BC until the arrival of Europeans in the sixteenth century, artists from the ancient Americas created small-scale architectural models to be placed in the tombs of important individuals. This ceramic effigy is one such model.
