Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita-Tumaco, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A mold-made pottery head depicting a royal personage, donning a large headdress/coiffure and round earspools, and presenting a serene countenance with almond-shaped eyes, a pronounced nose, and slightly open mouth. Wood block stand. Size: 2.75" W x 4" H (7 cm x 10.2 cm); 4.875" H (12.4 cm) on stand

The La Tolita-Tumaco culture resided on a series of islands in the mouth of the Rio Santiago, built of artificial mounds arranged around plazas along the river banks. Scholars have suggested that their figural pottery represented high-ranking personages, so this visage probably represented a ruler or shaman.
