Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 50 BCE to 175 CE (trumpet brooch), ca. 100 to 200 CE (bird brooch), ca. 200 to 600 CE (penannular brooch). A trio of Roman bronze brooches (fibulae) representing a wide range of styles and times. These items were used to fasten the ubiquitous cloak worn by the Romans, especially in the colder parts of the Empire. Size of trumpet: Size: 2.5" L x 1" W (6.4 cm x 2.5 cm); size of bird: 1.5" L x 0.8" W (3.8 cm x 2 cm); size of penannular: 2.4" W (6.1 cm).

Roman brooches changed style over time, but the trumpet brooch was one of the most enduring. So-named because the head of the brooch which protects the hinge resembles a trumpet; the example here has a an elegant, simple form. The bird brooch is a common form associated with Roman Britain and may have been inspired by Celtic art. Similar bird brooches are thought to be ducks, but this one's flared tail suggests it is modeled on a dove or a pigeon. The penannular brooch is a common later form that persisted beyond the Roman period - for example, some have been found in Anglo-Saxon graves. This one has an elegant, squared-off form with curled terminals, and a pin that wraps around the ring.
