Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Three striking "sheep face" pottery figures, two females and one presumably male, in characteristic hues of maroon and white. One female is seated with legs folded underneath and wearing a braided headband, large earspools, and a white painted necklace, with one hand under her breasts and the other behind her head. The standing female has arms outstretched, large breasts, similar finery as the seated female, and wide hips. The seated figure, presumably make from the painted nose-ring, features wide ears, a puffy face, and a decorated shawl covering his body. All three figures feature characteristically elongated heads, pointed noses, and thin-lipped grins, and are slip-painted red with all ornaments and details finely painted with white slip embellishments. Size of largest figure: 1.25" L x 3" W x 5" H (3.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 12.7 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand (only for standing female).
