Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Three terracotta figures from the West Mexican shaft tomb culture: one depicting a person lying on a pallet, perhaps representing the dead; one of a person playing a drum; and another of two people sitting side by side, covered with a single poncho, so that they appear to be conjoined twins. All are painted a creamy white and dark red. Size of largest (figure on pallet): 4.75" L x 2.25" W x 1.95" H (12.1 cm x 5.7 cm x 5 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to 2014 from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

  • Condition: On the two-headed figure, one head is repaired and restored with a tiny area of overpainting on the break line. The other two figures are intact. Very nice manganese deposits on the pallet figure.
