Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, ca. 300 CE. This is a collection of three small, simple animal amulets. One is a long-tailed, short-beaked bird, in a dark green stone; another is a red stone monkey seated with his tail coiled around his back; the third is a pale green snail with coiled shell. These amulets reflect the animals that Guerrero people would have seen in their everyday lives and probably would have been carried by individuals on their person or, as holes drilled in the monkey and the snail attest, worn as ornaments. Size of largest: 2-1/2" L x 1" W x 1/2" H (6 cm x 2-1/2 cm x 1 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994.
